Fall Sports Recap
Jason Franks - December 14, 2011
Grandview Heights’ stellar athletics lead them to excel this fall in all sports.
The Grandview community came together this fall to celebrate the success of all the fall sports this year. Historic seasons were made here in Grandview this fall.
Grandview offers Cross Country, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Volleyball, Tennis, Golf, and Football. Success is the only word to describe how these seasons went for Grandview athletics.
Possibly for the first time ever in the history of Grandview Heights, all of the fall sports beat our rival school, the West Jefferson Roughriders. Beating West Jefferson in every sport is one highlight that the Grandview community will never forget.
Fall athletics started early in the summer with the golf team going undefeated in all of their matches which placed them tied with Liberty Union and Fisher Catholic going into the post season MSL (Mid-State League Cardinal).
Through a hard fought battle the boys finished in second place behind Fisher Catholic. Adam Cincione earned all league honors and was named cardinal league boys golf player of the year.
The Cross Country team this year was one of the most impressive teams in Grandview Height’s history. The boy’s team was the youngest in Grandview’s history.
The girl’s team was lead by senior Selby Gage and Sophomore Halli Bair. The girl’s team made it all the way to Districts where their season ended with an unlucky event where the lead runner for Grandview, Hallie Baird was tripped.
This knocked Grandview down in the rankings.
The boys on the other hand lead by Sophomore Luke Evans and Junior Chase Gage made it to States. They ended their run by finishing 14 out of 16 schools.
Chase Gage, Luke Evans and Josh Smith received all league honors and Gage and Evans got all district. Sophomore Luke Evans was presented the Cardinal Division Runner of the Year.
The highlight of the volleyball season was the fifth annual Volley for the Cure over Grandview’s rival West Jefferson. It was a stunning victory going into the 5th game they clenched the victory to celebrate Volley for the Cure.
“Volley for the Cure is always the most popular game of the season, but because of the importance of the game this year against West Jeff the support doubled in size,” said Junior Maureen Flanagan.
The record might not reflect the team’s success this year. However compared to past years, they improved greatly and enjoyed every second.
The tennis team this year was a powerhouse. Lead by Leila Manirochana the team only lost three matches in their entire 12 game season.
As a team they got to the second round of the tournament. Earning all league and all district honors was senior Leila Manirochana and sophomore Kiley Kinnard earned all league honors.
The girl’s soccer team excelled improving from last year's record they went 11-6-2 with 6 shutouts. Senior Capitan Jordan Fitzgerald and junior Cristina Pinney earned all league honors
The highlight of the season was when the Grandview girls rose to victory over Fairbanks High School in the postseason tournament. The girls got knocked out in the third round of playoffs by Bishop Ready 2-0.
The boy’s soccer team finished 10-5-3 with 9 shutouts. Seniors Ben Mathes and Brendan Cox and Junior Ben Farynowski got All League and All District honors.
The highlights of the season include the stunning overtime victory over #2 ranked Tree of Life in the district semifinal which lead to an upset 1-0 victory in the district final against #3 ranked Columbus Academy.
The football team made also history being the first team in Grandview history to ever go 10-0, they also beat the record for the most points scored in the regular season with 410 and easily the most rushing yards achieved in the regular season. The two highlights were the wins over West Jeff and Liberty Union to clench a playoff spot and go 10-0.
Grandview Heights athletics this fall season has been one of the most successful in school history. Not only did every sport defeat our rival school West Jefferson, but also each individual team accomplished their own goals they set from the beginning of the season.
Hopefully we can continue our success when the winter sports seasons start. Go B obcats!
