Spirit Week Takes Over GHHS
Taylor Ramey - December 12, 2011
The week of October 14 was very important to GHHS, leading up to the big homecoming game.
October 10-14, 2011 was spirit week at GHHS. Spirit week is a busy time, leading up to the big football game that Friday night. Not only is there the football game, but also the dance the night after, and the powder puff football game the Sunday before.
This year, the theme of spirit week was “Big Cities.” Each class had a different city, and on Thursday night, they decorated their hallways to try and win money for their class. The teachers voted on the winners, and they announced them at the pep rally on Friday afternoon.
The freshman had New York, the sophomores had Hollywood, the juniors had Venice, and the seniors had Las Vegas. Winning the best hallway overall, was the juniors.
There are also themed days, and each day is different. Monday was Jersday, where each student wore a jersey from his or her favorite sports team. Tuesday was Twin Day. Students chose a friend and they dressed exactly the same.
Tuesday was also Mr. Irresistible Day. This is one of the student’s favorites, as it is a challenge to everyone. Girls get a beaded necklace and cannot talk to boys the entire day. But, the boys are trying their hardest to get them to talk. If they do, they get their beads, and the boy with the most beads at the end of the day is titled Mr. Irresistible. It’s a fun challenge at GHHS.
Wednesday was PJ Day, and students got to wear their favorite pajamas to school. Nickelodeon vs. Disney Day was Thursday. Students dressed up as a character from one of these TV shows to see who was better.
Friday was Dress Like Your Hall Day. On this day, students dressed up in what it would be like to live in their hallway: it’s themed. For example, the sophomores had Hollywood, and some of them dressed up as famous celebrities.
There was also the memorable pep rally on Friday afternoon. Football seniors Jason Franks, Oliver Rouch, Jake Smith, Ethan Calvert, Carter Jump, Will Heydinger, and Joe Anderson got the school pumped for the big game against Fisher Catholic.
The students were also introduced to the Homecoming Court: Oliver Rouch, Joe Anderson, Kyle McLain, Will Heydinger, and Ben Mathes for King. Selby Gage, Rebekah Keller, Brenna McLaughlin, Emily Lachey, and Olivia Reed were all in the running for Queen. The Homecoming Queen and King were announced at about 7:15, before the football game started.
Amidst all of these spirited activities, there was also a parade before the game. It started around 6:30, showing Grandview the members of the Homecoming Court and the GHHS Marching Band playing Cadences and Loyalty. Dr. Kie Watkins led the band, and got all of Grandview excited for the upcoming game.
The Sunday before spirit week started, there was a powder puff football game. It was underclassmen girls versus the upperclassmen girls. After a long battle, the upperclassmen girls ended up pulling in a win, getting the school pumped for the upcoming week.
It was a big game against Fisher Catholic, and the football team won 44-17, led by coach Jason Peters. Olivia Reed was crowned Homecoming Queen and Ben Mathes was crowned King.
Four students were interviewed on Thursday during spirit week. This was the Nickelodeon vs. Disney Day. Hannah Jones, Corinne Rase, Katie Flanagan, and Cece Albon had a lot to say.
“My favorite part about spirit week is seeing everyone’s costumes because they’re really funny!” says Hannah. “I enjoy getting to just dress up and see everyone else’s ridiculous outfits,” adds Corinne.
“I always participate in spirit week! Everyday! Every year...” says Hannah. “Last year I didn’t so much but this year I’ve done something everyday,” mentions Corinne. “I’ve participated in spirit week thus far,” adds freshman, Katie.
Each of them was asked what inspired them to wear their outfits. “I’m Pherb... that’s my favorite Disney Channel show... well Phineas and Pherb!” says Hannah. “Gabby Romero-Rose – She’s Piglet and I’m Pooh,” adds Katie. “It was the only thing I could...” says Cece, dressed up as Simba from The Lion King.
Spirit Week was a great time at GHHS and left the school excited for the rest of the football season to come. The Grandview Bobcats ended up with a 10-0 perfect season, winning League Champs.
